Check each fire door against the same points used in the gov.uk fire door checklist, note any defects and download a dated PDF for your records or your fire log book.

What to look for

The checks above follow the points in the gov.uk fire door checklist: the door, frame and wall; letterbox; glazing; hinges, locks and ironmongery; door gaps; strips and seals; self-closer; whether the door is wedged open; and any other damage. Older doors made to earlier standards may be acceptable without intumescent strips or smoke seals, so record what is fitted rather than marking it as a fault.

What to do about a defect

Record it, arrange a repair by someone competent, and add it to the action plan in your fire risk assessment. Keep the inspection records with your fire safety log book.

Do I need a fire door inspection in a small business?

The quarterly and yearly checks are specific to residential buildings over 11 m, but every Responsible Person must keep fire doors and other fire safety measures maintained. A regular documented check is the simplest way to show that.
