Free fire safety log book
A fire log book is where you record the routine checks, tests, drills and training that your fire risk assessment relies on. Choose the record sheets you need and download a printable PDF.
What goes in a fire log book
| Record | Typical frequency |
|---|---|
| Fire alarm test from a call point | Weekly |
| Emergency lighting functional test | Monthly, plus a full-duration test as your installer advises |
| Extinguishers visual check / service | Monthly check, annual service |
| Fire doors and escape routes | Regular walk-round; in blocks of flats over 11 m, communal fire doors every 3 months |
| Fire drill | At least once a year |
| Staff training | At induction and refreshed regularly |
Frequencies above are common good practice and, for fire doors in residential buildings over 11 m, the Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022 (in force since 23 January 2023). Your fire risk assessment may set different intervals.
Is a fire log book a legal requirement?
The Fire Safety Order does not name a “log book”, but it does require fire safety equipment to be maintained and the findings and arrangements of your fire risk assessment to be recorded. A log book is the usual way to show an inspector that the checks actually happen.
Keep it digital with Pro. Record tests on your phone, get reminders when a check is due, and keep the log next to each premises’ fire risk assessment.
